Anaheim DUI Accident Leaves 5 Injured, Including A Child

Early this morning, an Anaheim DUI accident left 5 people injured, including a 5-year-old child. At approximately 12:26 a.m. an impaired, 23-year-old man collided with another vehicle on the 5 Freeway. The crash sent Maria Garcia-Salas, Elizabeth Garcia, Rosa Garcia, Jesus Garcia, and Evelyn Aguilar to the hospital. Police arrested the driver, Sabah Mikha, on suspicion of felony drunken driving, reported the Orange County Register.

“Unfortunately, individuals in their early twenties are especially prone to drinking and driving,” remarked an Orange County car accident attorney.

Drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 accounted for 34% of the 11,773 fatal, alcohol-related accidents that occurred across the country in 2008, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—more than any other age group. Individuals between the ages of 25 and 34 followed closely behind, accounting for 31% of accidents that year.

While the percentage of drunk-driving fatalities nationwide decreased from 48% in 1982 to 32% in 2007, the incidence of impaired driving still remains quite high in California, with 1,239 fatal accidents in 2008 alone. In response, legislators in California have implemented a program that forces DUI offenders to install ignition interlock devices in their cars in four counties, as well as increased the number of DUI checkpoints statewide.
