At about 5:15 p.m. on Friday, November 29, a car struck and fatally injured 87-year-old Calvin Bottum, of Coalinga, in Barstow, reported the Desert Dispatch. The pedestrian accident occurred in the 1500 block of Main Street. Emergency responders transported Bottum to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on the evening of Tuesday, December 3. The Barstow Police Department is investigating the accident.

Barstow accounted for none of the 33 fatalities and 8 of the 409 injuries pedestrians suffered in traffic accidents that occurred in San Bernardino County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Throughout the county, traffic collisions claimed the lives of or caused injury to 29 pedestrians aged 65 or older, with the OTS ranking San Bernardino 40th out of 58 counties for its incidence of pedestrian accidents involving this age group in a rating system in which 1st place is the worst.
