At about 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, four people were killed and several were injured in a tour bus crash on Interstate 10 near Blythe, reported the Los Angeles Times. A big rig jackknifed on the freeway, sending its load of steel pipes across lanes on both sides. When the driver of the westbound bus swerved to avoid a collision, the bus left the roadway and rolled over. It came to a rest on its side about 50 feet from the road. Passengers Pablo Ramirez, 67, of Pico Rivera; Angel Hernandez, 49, of Hacienda Heights; Luz Rivera, 44, of Compton; and Jessica Garcia, 30, of Chula Vista, were killed in the crash. Between 21 and 28 passengers were injured, 6 of whom were flown to hospitals. An eastbound Chevrolet Suburban was also involved in the crash. The truck driver was not hurt. The Times did not indicate if any of the passengers were injured.
Every year in the United States, as many people, 700 million, ride motor coaches as domestic planes. In 2011, 283 people were killed and 24,000 were injured in bus crashes, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Over the past 10 years, collisions involving motor coaches have resulted in an average of 19 motor coach occupant deaths a year. The majority of these crashes involved driver-related problems, such as fatigue; the condition of the vehicle, such as failing equipment due to poor or improper maintenance; and the bus running off the road or striking roadside objects.
In California, when a bus accident results in injury or death, the victims or their families may hold the at-fault party—whether it be another driver, the bus operator, or multiple parties—civilly liable for the expenses associated with their recoveries or losses.
