Shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, October 5, an impaired driver struck and seriously injured 8-year-old Juan Perez-Rocha and his 6-year-old brother, Henry, in Citrus Heights. While traveling westbound on Greenback Lane in a Chrysler 300, 52-year-old Tresa Bales-Sterba collided with a Chevy Suburban that was headed southbound on Mariposa Avenue, the impact sending her Chrysler into the boys, who were traversing the crosswalk at Mariposa on their way to Skycrest Elementary School. They were transported to an area hospital, where the younger boy was in critical condition on Friday. Police arrested Bales-Sterba on suspicion of driving under the influence with injury and driving with a suspended or revoked license. An investigation into which driver had the right of way is being conducted.

“When a driver causes serious harm to others while violating traffic safety laws, the driver may face criminal charges and be legally obligated to compensate the victims for the cost of their recoveries,” explained California personal injury lawyer James Ballidis.

Citrus Heights accounted for 1 of the 37 fatalities and 21 of the 462 injuries suffered by pedestrians in traffic accidents that occurred in Sacramento in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 39 of the fatal and 703 of the injury crashes that occurred in the county that year.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to wish a full recovery to Juan and Henry Perez-Rocha, the two boys who were seriously injured in the accident involving the impaired driver.

The Sacramento Bee originally reported this crash.
