Shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 13-year-old Haven Alexandria Penman and 56-year-old Le Mason, both of Riverside, were killed in a collision with a drunk driver in Colton. While traveling southbound on Main Street in a Mercury Sable, 29-year-old Michael Dwayne Hughes, of Moreno Valley, crashed into Mason’s PT Cruiser as she turned left from a northbound lane of Main into the driveway of a business. Mason and Penman, a passenger in her vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities arrested Hughes on suspicion of DUI and homicide.
“When a family loses a loved one to a motor vehicle collision, they may file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver in order to hold him or her liable for their loss,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis.
Colton accounted for 3 of the 180 fatalities and 364 of the 11,050 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in crashes that occurred in San Bernardino County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 75 of the fatal and 860 of the injury collisions that occurred in the county that year.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the families of Haven Alexandria Penman and Le Mason, the two vehicle occupants killed in the collision with the drunk driver.
