At about 2 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2014, a driver was killed and a passenger injured in a crash on the 5 Freeway in Commerce, reported the Los Angeles Times. While traveling on the northbound side of the freeway, a Dodge Magnum struck the temporary supports for a 710 Freeway bridge-widening project north of Atlantic Boulevard. The northbound 5 Freeway and several lanes of the northbound 710 were closed for several hours while authorities investigated and cleared debris.

Motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of 341 people and caused injury to another 62,447 in Los Angeles County in 2011, according to the most current California Highway Patrol crash statistics. Two of the accidents that occurred in the city of Commerce resulted in death and 311 caused injury. Nighttime crashes, those that occurred between 9 p.m. and 2:59 a.m., resulted in 6,701 injuries or deaths in the county, which ranked the 9th worst in the state for motor vehicle traffic safety that year.
