Shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, 23-year-old Marcela Pacheco Garciaguirre, of Irvine, was killed in a suspected DUI crash on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa, reported the Orange County Register. While traveling on Harbor in a 2012 Nissan pickup truck, 22-year-old Brandon Anthony Alvarez, of Anaheim, collided with another vehicle at Date Place. As he fled northbound, he broadsided a 2013 Kia Optima that was exiting the off-ramp of the northbound I-405. Garciaguirre, the driver of the Kia, was declared dead at the scene. A 26-year-old Irvine man riding in her vehicle was injured and taken to the hospital. Police arrested Alvarez as he attempted to flee on foot. He faces charges for DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.
In Costa Mesa, motor vehicle accidents claimed 2 lives and caused injury to 920 people in 2011, according to the California Highway Patrol’s most current collision data. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Costa Mesa the 2nd worst in the state for a city its size for alcohol-related accidents that resulted in injury or death that year. Hit-and-run, for which the city ranked the 6th worst, was a factor in 54 of the collisions. Throughout Orange County, 88 people were killed and 17,182 were injured in crashes.
