Shortly after 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, six people were injured in a crash on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa, reported the Orange County Register. After evading a police officer who attempted to pull him over near Wilson Street, the driver of a red Toyota Corolla sideswiped a gray Ford pickup truck that was traveling southbound on Harbor, causing it to crash head-on with a Chevrolet Equinox. The impact sent the Equinox into a Hyundai Elantra that was traveling northbound on Harbor. The Equinox then crashed into a Chinese restaurant. Emergency responders transported six people to area hospitals. Authorities arrested the driver of the Corolla on suspicion of felony DUI and felony hit-and-run.
The California Office of Traffic Safety indicates that 718 people were killed or injured in motor vehicle collisions that occurred in Costa Mesa in 2011, the most current year for which collision data are available. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 86 of the fatal and injury accidents that occurred in the city that year. Fifty-four drivers fled the scene of accidents. Compared to 54 other cities with populations of between 100,001 and 250,000, Costa Mesa ranked the 4th worst for collisions, the 2nd worst for DUI crashes, and the 6th worst for hit-and-run accidents.
