At about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014, one person was killed and four others were injured in a semi crash in Downey, reported the Los Angeles Times. A 1997 Chevy Astro van crashed into the semi as it was preparing to turn left near the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Florence Avenue. An 18-year-old male passenger of the van was declared dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported four other occupants of the van to area hospitals to receive treatment for the trauma they suffered. Authorities are investigating the accident and have asked that anyone with information about it contact Detective Edwards at 562-904-2339 or Sgt. Miller at 562-904-2342.

In 2011, 676 people were killed or injured in collisions that occurred in Downey, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current crash data. Thirteen of the crashes involved drivers under the age of 21. Large trucks were involved in 53 of the crashes that resulted in death and 2,212 that caused injury in Los Angeles County in 2011.
