At about 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2014, two people were killed in a hit-and-run semi crash near Fowler, reported The Fresno Bee. A semi rear-ended a Kia Sephia sedan that was idling at a stop sign at Manning and Fowler avenues. The truck pushed the sedan into the intersection and then into a power pole. One passenger of the sedan was pinned inside the vehicle and another was ejected. Both sustained fatal trauma. The driver was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for minor to moderate injuries. The truck driver collided with another semi and fled the scene. Authorities apprehended him and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
Motor vehicle collisions claimed the lives of or caused injury to 5,152 people in Fresno County in 2011, according to the most current crash data available from the California Office of Traffic Safety. Fresno accounted for 10 of the 214 fatal and 135 of the 5,065 injury collisions involving large trucks that occurred in California that year. Hit-and-run was a factor in 310 of the crashes that resulted in injury or death in the county.
