Fresno: Gerardo Herrera Killed, Wife Seriously Injured in Crash with Drunk Driver
On the night of Sunday, March 4th, 53-year-old Gerardo Herrera was killed and his wife seriously injured in a crash with a drunk driver in Fresno. While traveling westbound on California Avenue in a Chevrolet Cavalier, Herrera was struck head-on by a Chevrolet Astro Van. Herrera, a father of six, sustained fatal trauma in the collision, while his wife suffered major injuries. She was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the van, 45-year-old Elidio Gonzalez, faces felony charges for driving under the influence.
“Alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents are a serious problem in the state,” explains California-based personal injury lawyer James Ballidis, “claiming 791 lives in 2010.”
Fresno County accounted for 49 of the 1,146 fatalities and 389 of the 17,976 injuries suffered in traffic accidents in which alcohol was a factor in California in 2009, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident statistics of counties with similarly sized populations, giving those with the poorest records the highest rankings, with 1st place considered the worst. That year, Fresno County ranked 43rd out of 58 counties for alcohol-involved fatal and injury collisions.
