Hilmar: Modesto Woman Critically Injured in Crash Involving Two Semi Trucks

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. yesterday, a Modesto woman was critically injured in a crash involving two semi trucks on Highway 165 and Johnson Avenue in Hilmar. The accident was triggered when the driver of a semi failed to notice that traffic had stopped due to an incident in the northbound lanes of the highway and continued to travel 45 miles per hour, rear-ending a Dodge Ram pickup truck. The impact sent the Dodge into the Mazda Tribute the woman was driving, which, in turn, crashed into the back of the semi that was stopped in front of it. The woman suffered major trauma and was airlifted to a Modesto hospital for treatment. The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries, while neither of the semi drivers was harmed. Authorities are investigating the collision, explains a California truck accident lawyer. 

Merced County accounted for 1,720 of the fatal and injury motor vehicle traffic accidents that occurred throughout the state in 2009, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Due to the size and weight of large trucks, accidents involving them tend to result in serious and fatal injuries, especially for the occupants of passenger vehicles. In 2009, 70 percent of the 3,163 people killed in traffic collisions with large trucks where passenger vehicle occupants, while 14 percent were truck occupants, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
