Shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29, a two-vehicle collision on Highland Avenue killed a mother and her two children in Hollywood. While traveling northbound in an Infiniti SUV, a man in his 40s swerved into the oncoming traffic of the opposing lane and collided with the Dodge Caravan the mother was driving, the impact sending it into a utility pole. The woman’s 8-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene; she and her 4-year-old daughter were transported to a hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the Infiniti was also taken to a hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

“After a fatal collision, the negligent party may be held liable by the family of the victims for their loss,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis. “In many cases, the family will file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver.”

Although the national incidence of motor vehicle fatalities has been declining in recent years—with a 1.7 drop recorded from 2010 to 2011—it has risen in some states. During this time, traffic deaths increased by 3.3 percent in California. While 2011 accident data is not available for Los Angeles, the California Office of Traffic Safety indicates that 72,010 people lost their lives or were injured in traffic incidents that occurred throughout the county in 2010.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of the mother and two children who were killed in the two-vehicle collision on Highland Avenue this morning. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the man who was injured.

The Los Angeles Daily News originally reported this fatal Hollywood collision.
