Huntington Beach: Bicyclist Jurgen Ankenbrand Died After Being Struck by Two Vehicles

69-year-old bicyclist Jurgen Ankenbrand died last Wednesday evening after two vehicles struck him in the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Villa Pacific Drive in Huntington Beach. Ankenbrand had been riding along the driver side of a dark colored Toyota 4Runner when the vehicle struck him while turning left onto Brookhurst Street. The driver of the 4Runner fled after knocking him off of his bicycle, leaving him down in the southbound No. 1 lane of Brookhurst, where a white Honda Odyssey van subsequently struck him. Authorities are investigating the accident and have asked anyone with information to contact Huntington Beach police at 714-536-5666, explains an Orange County injury attorney

When collecting accident statistics, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration refers to bicyclists, tricyclists, unicyclists, and the riders of other nonmotorized vehicles as pedalcyclists. According to NHTSA, fatal accidents involving pedalcyclists occurred more frequently in urban areas (69%), at non-intersection locations (64%), between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. (28%), and during the months of June (9%) and September (12%). In 2008, Huntington Beach accounted for none of the 10 fatal and 157 of the 1,087 injury traffic collisions involving bicyclists, according to the California Highway Patrol’s accident statistics.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Jurgen Ankenbrand.
