Huntington Beach Ranks Number One For Drunk Driving Accidents

Huntington Beach may have more drunk drivers than any other similar-sized city in California.
 
A report released by the Office of Traffic and Safety lists Huntington Beach as having more drunk driving crashes than the 56 other California cities with populations between 100,000 and 250,000.
 
In 2009, there were 195 alcohol-related collisions for 2009 in which the victims were killed or injured.  In 2010, alcohol was a factor in five of nine fatal Huntington Beach accidents.
 
Other Orange County cities included in the top ten were Costa Mesa and Orange. Fullerton, Mission Viejo, Irvine and Garden Grove were also on the list, but had lower rankings.
 
Huntington Beach has been consistently ranked in the top 10 cities with the alcohol-related collisions since 2005. However, police also work hard to prevent Huntington Beach drunk driving crashes.  The DUI arrest rate for Huntington Beach is 1.28 percent ; the California average is .9 percent.
 
The Office of Traffic and Safety OTS has also compiled a list of the top 50 DUI cities in California in 2010.  were listed in its annual performance report. On that list, which includes cities of all sizes, Huntington Beach is ranked No. 16 and Santa Ana is ranked at No. 8.  Orange, Newport Beach and Fullerton are also on the list.
