At about 3:35 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, 32-year-old Ignacio Campa Jr., of Rancho Mirage, was killed in a semi crash in Kelso, reported the Desert Dispatch. While traveling northbound on Kelbaker Road in a 2011 Jaguar XJL, Campa collided with the big rig, which was traveling through the Kelbaker Road and I-40 ramp intersection. Campa suffered fatal trauma and was declared dead at the scene. Neither the truck driver nor passenger was hurt. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Throughout San Bernardino County, 11,627 people were killed or injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2011, according to the most current accident data the California Office of Traffic Safety has published on its website. Large trucks were involved in 29 of the fatal and 438 of the injury collisions that occurred in the county. Across the state, truck crashes claimed 245 lives and injured 5,155 people.
