At about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, a 55-year-old male cyclist was seriously injured in a crash on North Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, reported the Orange County Register. A Toyota Prius struck the rider near Emerald Bay. Emergency responders transported him to an area hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. Although it was initially reported that the driver fled, authorities found that the driver had stopped a short distance from crash scene. The accident is under investigation.
The most current California Office of Traffic Safety crash statistics indicate that 13 cyclists were killed and 1,313 were injured in traffic accidents that occurred in Orange County in 2011. In Laguna Beach, traffic collisions claimed the life of one bicyclist and caused injury to 10 others that year. Orange County ranked the 12th worst in the state for bicyclist safety in 2011.
