At about 8:35 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, a drunk driver struck and killed 38-year-old cyclist Lucia Ruano near Lake Elsinore. While traveling southbound on Grand Avenue in a silver 1999 Ford F150 pickup truck, 40-year-old Jay Dustin Sorrell veered onto the right shoulder and collided with Ruano, who was riding southbound at the time, near Corydon Street. Emergency responders transported her to an area hospital, where she died from the trauma she suffered. Authorities arrested Sorrell on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
“After a fatal accident, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death claim against the responsible party in order to be compensated for their loss,” explained California bicycle accident attorney James Ballidis.
Lake Elsinore accounted for 1 of the 8 fatalities and 7 of the 334 injuries suffered by bicyclists in traffic accidents that occurred in Riverside County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Eight bicyclists suffered serious or fatal trauma in traffic accidents in Lake Elsinore that year. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 10 of the collisions that resulted in injury or death.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Lucia Ruano, the cyclist whom the drunk driver struck and killed.
