Newport Beach: Teens Abdulrahman M. Alyahyan, Nozad Al Hamawendi, Cecilia D. Zamora, Aurora C. Cabrera, and Robin A. Cabrera Killed in Crash
At about 5:20 p.m. on Monday, May 27, Abdulrahman M. Alyahyan, Nozad Al Hamawendi, Cecilia D. Zamora, and Robin A. Cabrera, all 17 years old, were killed in a crash in Newport Beach. Sixteen-year-old Aurora C. Cabrera also lost her life in the accident. While traveling southbound on Jamboree Road in an Infiniti, Alyahyan crashed into a tree on a divider just north of Island Lagoon Drive. Four of the teens were ejected from the car. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the fifth victim to a local hospital, where the victim died a short time later. Authorities suspect that excessive speed may have contributed to the crash and are investigating.
“California law provides recourse through the civil justice system for those who have lost loved ones to motor vehicle collisions,” explained an auto accident attorney in Orange County. “In many cases, the surviving family members will file wrongful death claims against the party at-fault for the accident.”
Nationwide, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers, claiming the lives of seven teens ages 16 to 19 every day in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Newport Beach accounted for none of the 71 fatalities and 470 of the 17,031 injuries suffered in collisions that occurred in Orange County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. That year, drivers under the age of 21 were involved in three of the crashes that resulted in injury or death in the city.
