At about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2014, a pickup truck struck and killed pedestrian Edward Salkin in the Newport Beach town of Corona del Mar, reported the Orange County Register. The accident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway near Morning Canyon Road. Salkin was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities arrested the driver of the truck, 23-year-old Robert John Greaney, on suspicion of DUI causing bodily injury. The accident is under investigation.
Throughout Orange County, 39 pedestrians were killed and 828 were injured in traffic accidents in 2011, the most current year for which the California Office of Traffic Safety has published crash statistics. None of the collisions that occurred in Newport Beach that year resulted in the death of a pedestrian; however, 28 caused injury. The OTS ranked Newport Beach the 7th worst in the state for a city its size for alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2011.
Under California law, when a driver causes a fatal accident, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death claim against the driver in order to hold him or her liable for their loss. For more information on the wrongful death claims process, please call 888-752-7474 or contact us online.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Edward Salkin.
