At about 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14, four people were injured in a crash near a DUI checkpoint in Ontario. While traveling at what witnesses reported was nearly 100 mph in a white minivan, 47-year-old Rick Owen Dell ran a red light at Philadelphia Street and Grove Avenue while fleeing a DUI checkpoint at Grove Avenue and Belmont Street. He struck a GMC Yukon that was traveling west through the intersection, the impact sending the minivan into a light pole. Emergency responders transported the driver of the Yukon to the hospital to receive treatment for moderate trauma. Dell ran from the scene of the crash but was later apprehended and arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and driving under the influence. Dell and his two passengers also received medical attention for minor injuries.
“Under California law, the victims of motor vehicle collisions may file personal injury claims against the negligent party in order to obtain compensation for the expenses associated with their recoveries,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis, “such as for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.”
Ontario accounted for 15 of the 180 fatalities and 1,371 of the 11,050 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in crashes that occurred in San Bernardino County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 69 of the collisions that resulted in injury or fatality in Ontario that year. Statewide, alcohol-impaired driving crashes claimed 774 lives.
