At about 6:40 p.m. on Monday, September 15, 2014, a vehicle struck and fatally injured Vincente Banagale in a crosswalk in Orange, reported the Orange County Register. The motorist was traveling westbound on La Veta Avenue and failed to notice Banagale, who was in his 80s, riding a motorized scooter through a crosswalk with his daughter and another man at South Devon Road. The motorist entered the crosswalk, striking all three. Emergency responders transported them to the hospital, where Banagale later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities are investigating the accident and have requested that witnesses call the Orange Police Department at 714-744-7444.
The California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current records indicate that 773 people were killed or injured in crashes that occurred in Orange in 2011. Fifty of the victims were pedestrians, seven of whom were over the age of 65 and seven of whom were under the age of 15. Nationwide, the elderly and the young are the most vulnerable to pedestrian accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
