At about 6 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2014, an SUV crashed into a pizzeria in Pacoima, critically injuring a 5-year-old boy. Nine other people suffered minor injuries. The accident occurred in the 12000 block of Van Nuys Boulevard. Emergency responders transported the boy to a hospital to receive treatment for major head trauma, along with six others, including a 1-month-old baby and another child, reported the Los Angeles Times. Firefighters treated two adults and a child at the scene; however, they declined transport to a hospital. Authorities are investigating the accident.
The California Highway Patrol’s most current crash statistics indicate that 341 people were killed and 62,447 were injured in motor vehicle collisions that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2011. Data was not available for the community of Pacoima. Throughout California in 2011, 30 of the victims of fatal accidents and 2,984 of those of injury collisions were aged 4 or younger; 66 of the victims of fatal crashes and 13,086 of those involved in injury accidents were aged 5 to 14.
