At about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 77-year-old passenger Maria A. Mendoza, of Indio, was killed in a rollover accident in Palm Springs. A 2009 Mitsubishi Gallant struck the 1998 BMW Mendoza was riding in on Interstate 10, the impact causing the BMW to roll multiple times into the desert. Mendoza was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders transported the 62-year-old male driver of the BMW and two other passengers to an area hospital. The female driver of the other vehicle was not injured. Authorities are investigating the crash.
“Those who are seriously injured in a collision may hold the at-fault party liable for recovery-related expenses,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis. “In the event a victim does not survive the crash, his or her family may file a wrongful death claim in order to be compensated for their loss.”
Palm Springs accounted for 11 of the 164 fatalities and 386 of the 10,594 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in crashes that occurred in Riverside County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident data of cities with populations of a similar size, ranking those with the poorest records, starting with 1st place as the worst. That year, Palm Springs ranked 3rd out of 93 cities for the number of fatal and injury crashes that occurred there.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Maria A. Mendoza, the passenger who was killed in the rollover accident. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the driver and passengers who were injured.
