At about 11:05 a.m. on Sunday, October 6, 11-year-old Zachary Mercier was fatally injured in an off-road motorcycle accident in Phelan, reported the Daily Press. Mercier was riding an off-road motorcycle near the intersection of Centola Road and Sundown Drive when he collided head-on with another off-road bike. Emergency responders transported him to an area hospital, where he succumbed to the trauma he suffered a short time later. The CHP is investigating the crash.
In the event of a motorcycle accident, the riders involved lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle, making them more susceptible to suffering serious or fatal injury. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that per mile traveled in 2010, the incidence of fatalities on motorcycles was about 30 times that of in cars. Ninety-one percent of the motorcyclists who lost their lives in accidents in 2011 were males, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
After a fatal motorcycle accident, the family of the victim may hold the at-fault party liable through the civil justice system. For more information on the civil claims process after a fatal motorcycle collision, please call 866-981-5596.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Zachary Mercier.
