At about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 81-year-old passenger Barbara Schmitz was fatally injured and two other people suffered major trauma in a two-car collision in Rancho Mirage. While traveling near the intersection of Highway 111 and Dune Views, a BMW collided with a Ford Focus. Schmitz was taken to a hospital, where she died a couple of hours later. Emergency responders extricated the drivers from the wreckage and transported them to area hospitals, where one is recovering and the other is receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries. Authorities are investigating the accident.
“When a crash causes serious or fatal injury, the victims or their surviving family members have recourse through the civil justice system,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis, “and may file injury or wrongful death claims in order to be compensated for the expenses associated with their recoveries or losses.”
Rancho Mirage accounted for none of the 164 fatalities and 99 of the 10,594 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in traffic accidents that occurred in Riverside County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Riverside County 46th out of 58 counties for its incidence of fatal and injury accidents in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Barbara Schmitz, the woman who was fatally injured in the collision. We would also like to wish a full recovery to the two drivers who were seriously injured.
Additional information on the injury and the wrongful death claims process is available to the public free of charge through our office.
