At about 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014, a car crash in Riverdale claimed the lives of five family members. While traveling westbound on Excelsior Avenue in a red minivan, 41-year-old Juana Martinez Bajarano ran a stop sign at Marks Avenue, colliding with the family’s southbound Ford SUV. The impact caused the Ford to burst into flames. The father, who had been following behind the SUV, rushed to try to save his wife, 29-year-old Esmeralda Saucedo, and children, 11-year-old Breanna Reyes-Saucedo, 6-year-old Jada Saucedo, 3-year-old Nikko Saucedo, and 1-year-old Isaac Saucedo. He suffered burns as he broke the windows of the SUV and had to be pulled away from the fiery wreckage.

The family had reportedly been on their way to a restaurant to celebrate the youngest child’s birthday when the accident occurred. California Highway Patrol officers indicated to abclocal.go.com that Bajarano could face vehicular manslaughter charges.

Throughout Fresno County, motor vehicle accidents claimed the lives of 89 people and caused injury to another 4,675 in 2011, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Fresno 41st out of 58 counties for its incidence of fatal and injury crashes that year in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst. Traffic signs and signals were a contributing factor to 129 of the fatal and 12,610 of the injury accidents that occurred in the state that year.

When a driver’s negligence causes a fatal accident, the family of the victim may hold the driver liable for their loss by filing a wrongful death claim. For more information about the wrongful death claims process, please call 888-752-7474 or contact us online.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Esmeralda Saucedo, Breanna Reyes-Saucedo, Jada Saucedo, Nikko Saucedo, and Isaac Saucedo.
