Authorities in Sacramento have identified the vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run last week. The March 22nd accident occurred on Winding Way near Carnegie Way when a white 1997-98 Ford Expedition struck 57-year-old Paul Pellandini and 54-year-old William Collins, the impact killing Pallandini and seriously injuring Collins. A representative for the California Highway Patrol indicated that the vehicle probably has a broken right headlight, right side mirror, and windshield. Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of this vehicle or this accident is asked to call the CHP’s Special Investigations Unit at (916) 338-6710.

“A hit-and-run accident can have devastating consequences for the victim and his or her family,” explained California personal injury attorney James Ballidis. “In the absence of the driver to hold accountable and uninsured motorist coverage, the victim often incurs debt from medical bills and lost earnings.”

The city of Sacramento accounted for 8 of the 27 fatalities and 208 of the 413 injuries suffered by pedestrians in traffic accidents throughout the county in 2009, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident statistics of cities with similarly sized populations, giving those with the poorest records the highest rankings; first place is considered the worst. In 2010, Sacramento ranked 6th out of 13 cities for fatal and injury pedestrian accidents.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Paul Pellandini, the pedestrian who was killed by the hit-and-run driver last week. We would also like to wish a full recovery to William Collins.

Resources for accident victims and their families, including articles on pedestrian rights and the process of pursuing an injury or a wrongful death claim, are available to the public free of charge.

If you would like to request one of these free resources, or to speak with a California personal injury attorney, feel free to call 866-981-5596
