Shortly after midnight on Friday, July 18, 2014, 85-year-old John Preciado went missing from an assisted care facility located at 1376 Jasper Avenue in Mentone, reported The Press-Enterprise. At about 8:50 p.m. that night, Preciado, who suffered from diabetes and schizophrenia, was fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident. A vehicle struck him as he crossed the street near West Rialto Avenue and G Street in San Bernardino and fled the scene. Emergency responders transported Preciado to an area hospital, where he succumbed to the trauma he suffered early Saturday morning. Authorities are investigating the hit-and-run accident.
Throughout San Bernardino County, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 44 pedestrians and caused injury to another 421 in 2011, according to the most current collision data available from the California Highway Patrol. Thirty-seven of the victims were aged 65 or older. Hit-and-run was a factor in 539 of the accidents that resulted in injury or death. Across California, pedestrian fatalities decreased 3.9 percent from 633 in 2011 to 612 in 2012.
