At about 7:10 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014, 30-year-old Jose Zacarias was killed and 21-year-old Danny Ramadan was seriously injured in a head-on crash in the Shandin Hills area or northwest San Bernardino, reported The Press-Enterprise. While traveling northbound on Little Mountain Drive, Zacarias veered into the opposing lane of traffic north of Bond Street and collided with the vehicle Ramadan was driving. Authorities suspect that speeding was a factor and are investigating the collision.

Throughout San Bernardino County, motor vehicle collisions claimed the lives of 190 people and caused injury to 10,602 in 2011, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Speed was a contributing factor to 2,389 of the crashes that resulted in injury or death. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident statistics of the state’s 58 counties, giving those with the poorest records the highest rankings, starting with 1st place. That year, San Bernardino ranked 35th for speed-related accidents.

In California, when a motorist’s negligence results in an injury or fatal accident, the victims or their families may file civil claims against the motorist in order to be compensated for the expenses related to their recoveries or losses.
