At around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 8th, one person was killed and another was seriously injured in a multiple-vehicle collision on the 101 Freeway in San Mateo. The crash was triggered by a white pickup truck that was blocking a southbound lane of the highway; several vehicles collided with the truck, including a 2010 Mazda 3, the impact causing the driver to sustain major head trauma and a passenger to suffer fatal injuries. Another passenger in the car did not appear to be seriously injured when emergency responders arrived but was transported to a hospital as a precaution. The occupants of the other vehicles involved in the accident, a Ford van, a black Honda Civic, and a gold Honda Accord, were not injured. Authorities are searching for the driver of the white pickup, as they were unable to locate him or her at the scene of the crash. The California Highway Patrol has requested that witnesses contact Officer Graham at 650-369-6261.

“In the absence of the driver at-fault for the accident, the victims have no one to hold accountable for their injury or loss,” explained California personal injury lawyer James Ballidis, which is why it is always fortunate when authorities are able to apprehend the driver.”

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 3,228 people were killed or injured in traffic collisions in San Mateo County in 2010. The agency compares the accident data of 58 counties in the state, giving those with the greatest incidences of fatal and injury collisions the highest rankings, with 1st place being the worst. That year, San Mateo ranked 56th.

All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of the person who was killed in the multiple-vehicle collision. We would also like to wish a full recovery to those who were injured.

Additional information on the injury and wrongful death claims process is available to the public free of charge through our office.
