On Thursday, September 5, Seal Beach police officers apprehended the hit-and-run driver who seriously injured a motorcyclist at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Anderson Street. While traveling southbound on PCH in a pickup truck, 31-year-old Nathan Teixeira, of Bakersfield, failed to yield to the southbound motorcyclist while he was attempting to enter a private driveway, reported the Orange County Register. Paramedics transported the rider to an area hospital to receive treatment for major trauma.

Teixeira fled the accident scene on foot. When a resident of the area overheard him talking about the crash on his cell phone, authorities were notified of his whereabouts. Police arrested him on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence causing injury. He was released from the Seal Beach Detention Center after posting $50,000 bail. The accident is under investigation, and authorities have requested that witnesses contact Officer Jeff Gibson at 562-799-4100, Ext. 1160.

Across California, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 414 motorcyclists in 2011, a 15 percent increase from 2010, when the California Office of Traffic Safety recorded 352 deaths. Nationwide, 4,388 motorcyclists died in collisions in 2011. The incidence of motorcyclist fatalities has been increasing since 1998, with the exception of 2008-2009, when it decreased 16 percent, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

California law ensures that those who have suffered injury in a motorcycle accident may seek compensation from the at-fault party for expenses related to their recovery, such as medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
