On the afternoon of Thursday, February 21, a hit-and-run driver struck and killed bicyclist Bernard Cooper in Simi Valley. While driving eastbound on Tierra Rejada Road, 20-year-old Nicolas Santiago collided with Cooper as he rode east along the shoulder of the road. He was declared dead at the scene. Although Santiago initially fled, he returned and was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. Authorities are investigating the accident.
“When a driver’s negligence claims the life of a cyclist, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death claim against the driver in order to obtain compensation for their loss,” explained California bicycle accident lawyer James Ballidis.
In 2010, 1 bicyclist was killed and 279 were injured in traffic accidents in Ventura County, with Simi Valley accounting for 30 of the injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Hit-and-run was a factor in 9 of the accidents that resulted in injury or fatality in the city that year.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Bernard Cooper.
