On the night of Tuesday, April 30, one person was killed and several were injured in a collision involving a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles. Police suspect the occupants of a silver Pontiac perpetrated a drive-by shooting at a fundraiser at West 79th and South Hoover Streets, causing a black Dodge Charger to chase the Pontiac to the intersection of Broadway and West Manchester Avenue, where the vehicles ran a red light and collided with cross traffic. The Pontiac slammed into a Saturn, the impact claiming the driver’s life. The driver of the Pontiac and passengers fled the scene on foot. The Charger crashed into a pickup truck, sending it into two parked vehicles and a bicyclist. Emergency responders transported the driver of the Charger to a hospital to receive treatment for major trauma. Several other people were also treated for minor injuries. The accident is under investigation.

“When vehicle occupants are seriously or fatally injured in a crash, they or their families may hold the negligent parties liable for the expenses associated with their recoveries or losses,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis.

In 2010, traffic accidents claimed the lives of 346 people and injured another 62,881 in Los Angeles County, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Speed was a factor in 14,181 of the crashes that resulted in injury or death in the city that year, with the California Office of Traffic Safety ranking Los Angeles 21st out of 58 counties for speed-related accidents in a rating system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
