At about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 10, Jason Shmelnik and two others were killed in a fiery crash in Studio City. The driver of a BMW crashed into a tree and then Reno’s Pizzeria, severing a gas line, which ignited a fire. Shmelnik and the other two occupants of the vehicle, neither of whom have been identified, died in the accident. According to the friend of the driver, alcohol may have been a contributing factor. Authorities are investigating the crash.
“When vehicle occupants are killed in an accident, their families may hold the driver accountable for his or her negligence,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis.
Drinking and driving claims thousands of lives and devastates just as many families every year in the United States. Every 48 minutes a life is lost due to this serious traffic safety problem. In 2009, there were 10,839 alcohol-related traffic fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the families of Jason Shmelnik and the other two victims of this crash.
