At about 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20th, 19-year-old passenger Dana Corleto was killed in a crash in Sun Valley. While traveling southbound on Glenoaks Boulevard in a gray, 2002 Volkswagen Passat, 18-year-old Jesus Felix lost control of the vehicle near Truesdale Street and veered into opposing lanes of traffic, where he struck a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. Corleto sustained major trauma in the collision and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Felix and the truck driver, Gagik Harutyunyun, 53, suffered minor injuries. Authorities arrested Felix at the hospital for Felony Vehicular Manslaughter. Witnesses, or anyone with information about the accident, are asked to call Officer Daniel Menesez with the Valley Traffic Division Detectives at 818-644-8026.
“When a driver’s negligence causes the death of a passenger, the victim’s family may hold the driver civilly liable for their loss,” explained California car accident lawyer James Ballidis. “In many cases, the family will pursue a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver.”
Traffic collisions claimed the lives of 390 passenger vehicle occupants and injured another 64,178 in Los Angeles County in 2009, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. That year, driving on the wrong side of the road was a primary collision factor in 157 of the fatal and 5,552 of the injury crashes that occurred in the state.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Dana Corleto, the passenger who was killed in the crash in Sun Valley yesterday.
