At about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 21-year-old passenger Saxon Matsuki was killed in a rollover crash in Sun Valley, reported the Los Angeles Times. While traveling at about 60 mph on the 5 Freeway, the driver of the vehicle in which Matsuki was riding lost control and collided with the concrete barrier near Hollywood Way, the impact causing the vehicle to rollover multiple times. Matsuki was thrown from the vehicle. Emergency responders declared him dead a short time after the crash. Another passenger and the driver suffered trauma ranging from minor to moderate. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Passengers accounted for 105 of the 346 motor vehicle occupants who were killed and 20,620 of the 62,881 who were injured in collisions that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Nighttime crashes, accidents occurring between 9 p.m. and 2:59 a.m., accounted for 6,760 of the injuries and fatalities.
