Suspected DUI driver hits vehicle at over 100 MPH killing the occupant.

Orange County California:  We drive on the 73 toll road because we know it as an easy way to get to the 91 freeway from south county.  However, for Brook Boynton, the trip was deadly. A Ladera Ranch resident, Richard Ernest Caselli, was driving his Volvo in excess of 100 MPH when he struck a Nissan SUV driven by Boynton, killing him.  The Orange County district attorney is pressing vehicular manslaughter charges against Caselli.
What makes this case more obnoxious is that Caselli showed signs of intoxication and failed to perform field sobriety tests, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Our sympathies are extended to the family of Boynton for this unfortunate and frustrating loss of life. I hope you find an attorney that will at least make this gentleman own up to his financial responsibilities.

Apparently Boynton has participated in ironman competitions and had done well.  It is a shame that we enjoy the privilege of living in a free society, but others like Mr. Ernest rob us of that freedom, because Mr. Ernest chose to be so careless as to speed at over 100MPH and drive while impaired.

As an update to the previous story, recently the court heard Mr. Caselli's plea and he plead guilty.  However, it was not until an outpouring of testimonials from friends and family to the court with Mr. Caselli present. Family reports that Mr. Caselli was brought to tears during these readings.  He will be sentenced later this year.

I think that a great idea would be to have every person convicted of a drunk driving offense, whether involved in an accident or not, required to meet with family members of others killed by drunk driving or mandatory that they sit though real testimony from family members in Court, who are left to speak after such a tragedy.  Maybe they will listen more to those people, than they do to a judge, sitting the bench.
