Shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014, motorcyclist Shaun Young, of Fort Irwin, was involved in a collision with another rider, Richard Maldonado, of Victorville, in that city, reported the Daily Press. The crash occurred on Jasmine Street west of Hesperia Road, the impact throwing both riders from their bikes. Emergency responders transported them to area hospitals. Young succumbed to the trauma he suffered at 7:51 a.m. the following morning. At the hospital, it was discovered that Maldonado, who suffered multiple injuries, was under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently arrested for DUI. Witnesses, or anyone with information about the crash, are asked to call Deputy Stone with the Victorville Major Accident Investigation Team at 760-241-2911.
In 2011, the most recent year for which the California Highway Patrol has published accident statistics, collisions claimed the life of 1 motorcyclist and caused injury to 9 others in Victorville. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 34 of the crashes that caused injury or death in the city. Across San Bernardino County, 544 motorcyclists were killed or injured in crashes and alcohol was a contributing factor 1,446 of the fatal and injury motor vehicle accidents.
