Shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 17-year-old Jessica Rose Luna, of El Monte, was killed in a car accident on the 10 Freeway in West Covina. Luna was a passenger in a red sedan that crashed with an SUV and another vehicle on the westbound side of the freeway at Pacific Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Several other vehicle occupants were injured. Authorities are investigating whether or not alcohol contributed to the collision.
“When the negligence of one motorist results in an accident causing serious or fatal injuries to others, the motorist may be held liable for expenses associated with the recovery of the victims or the losses suffered by their families,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis.
West Covina accounted for 2 of the 346 fatalities and 574 of the 62,881 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in traffic accidents that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The California Office of Traffic Safety compares the accident data of cities with similarly sized populations, giving those with the poorest records the highest rankings, with 1st place considered the worst. That year, West Covina ranked 24th out of 53 cities for its incidence of fatal and injury crashes.
All of us at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis, and Leslie would like to offer our condolences to the family of Jessica Rose Luna, the passenger who was killed in the car accident on the 10 Freeway.
