At about 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014, 16-year-old skateboarder Logan Wells was fatally injured in an accident in Yorba Linda. A Kia Sorrento struck Wells near Secretariat Way as it traveled eastbound on Bastanchury Road. Emergency responders transported him to an area hospital, where he succumbed to the trauma he suffered. The 61-year-old male driver of the vehicle is not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, which is under investigation.
Family members and friends of the El Dorado High School student constructed a makeshift memorial of flowers, candles, and skateboards near the scene of the collision on Sunday, reported the Los Angeles Times.
Throughout Orange County, traffic accidents claimed 140 lives and caused injury to 19,323 people in 2011, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. None of the deaths were suffered in Yorba Linda that year; however, the city accounted for 151 of the collisions that resulted in injury. Yorba Linda ranked 94th out of 102 cities with populations of between 50,001 and 100,000 for the number injury crashes that occurred there in a California Office of Traffic Safety ranking system in which 1st place is considered the worst.
