On the evening of Sunday, February 3, the driver of a tour bus carrying 38 people, including children, lost control of the vehicle while traveling on California Highway 38 near Yucaipa, causing it to collide with a pickup truck and a sedan. Seven of the passengers on the bus died at the scene. They have been identified as Guadalupe Olivas, 61; Elvira Garcia Jimenez, 40; Victor Cabrera Garcia, 13; Aleida Adriana Arce Hernandez, 38; Rubicelia Escobedo Flores, 34; Mario Garcia Santoyo, 32; and Liliana Camerina Sanchez Sauceda, 24. The driver of the truck, 72-year-old Fred Bailey Richardson, suffered major trauma and was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. Authorities are investigating the accident, as well as the safety history of the tour bus company.
“When a family loses a loved one to a motor vehicle collision, they may hold the at-fault party civilly liable for their loss,” explained California bus accident attorney James Ballidis.
Yucaipa accounted for 1 of the 180 fatalities and 225 of the 11,050 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in collisions that occurred in San Bernardino County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. The number of lives lost in traffic accidents in the state increased 2.6 percent, from 2,720 in 2010 to 2,791 in 2011.
