At about 6:15 p.m. on Monday, October 6, 2014, a vehicle struck and fatally injured 13-year-old Owen McNichols, of Morongo Valley, in Yucca Valley. While traveling westbound in a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 21-year-old Douglas Derby ran a red light and hit McNichols, who was traversing the highway on a Razor scooter in a marked crosswalk at Inca Trail. Emergency responders transported the teen to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs and then flew him to Loma Linda Medical Center, where he succumbed to the trauma he suffered at about 10:20 p.m. Authorities are investigating the accident.
Pedestrians accounted for 2 of the 8 people who were killed and 6 of the 52 who were injured in traffic accidents that occurred in Yucca Valley in 2011, according to the California Highway Patrol’s most current records. Throughout San Bernardino County, pedestrians accounted for 44 of the 240 traffic fatalities and 421 of the 11,382 injuries suffered that year. Traffic signs and signals were a primary collision factor in 129 of the accidents that resulted in death and 12,610 of those that caused injury in the state.
When a driver’s negligence causes a fatal traffic accident, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death claim against the driver in order to be compensated for their loss. For more information, please call 888-752-7474 or contact us online.
