Street racing in Orange County - A safety hazard on Southern California highways.
I recently posted a news article about four teens who were injured in a prom night car crash. Police suspected that the teens were illegally street racing.
Street racing or unsanctioned street racing is the term for illegal car racing that takes place on public highways. Street racing occurs spontaneously with no warning to others motorists using the road and often a combination of both high speeds and alcohol. When cars are travelling above the speed limit, crashes are especially deadly. More than 150 wrongful deaths a year are attributed to street racing accidents.
In California, any unsanctioned street racing is illegal. Anyone convicted for street racing automatically faces both fines and at least 48 hours of jail time. The driver's vehicle may be impounded. If someone is killed in a street racing accident, the driver may be charged with felony manslaughter. He may also face wrongful death charges in civil court.
Illegal street racers tend to be young men between the ages of 15 and 24.This demographic group is also the group most likely to be involved in drunk driving accidents and overall traffic accidents. Young drivers lack both the judgment and experience of older drivers and are more inclined to take risks. Even experienced drivers find it hard to control a vehicle that is travelling at speeds up to 100 M.P.H. Professional race car drivers spend many years learning to control cars that are moving at such speeds. Inexperienced drivers cannot maintain that level of control. Street racers puts own lives and the lives of everyone else on the road at risk.
In addition to criminal charges, drivers who cause a street racing accident can be held liable for property damage as well as for any injuries or deaths caused by the accident. Damages may include hospital and medical care, on-going therapy, disability, pain and suffering, burial expenses, loss of income, loss of future earnings and even punitive damages.
If you have been injured or your loved one has been killed in an accident caused by street racing or another act by a reckless driver, you are entitled to compensation for all your injuries and losses.
