77-Year-Old Killed in Irvine Traffic Accident

A 77-year-old woman is dead after her car was broadsided by a van at an Irvine intersection in an Orange County traffic accident.
 
The Irvine motor vehicle crash occurred at about 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at the intersection of Culver Drive and Farwell Avenue.  Seventy-seven-year-old Patricia Thompson-Yates of Irvine was driving a Toyota car east on Farwell Avenue when her vehicle was broadsided by a van heading south on Culver Drive.  Police say it is unclear which vehicle had the right-of-way at the time of the crash.
 
Thompson-Yates sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Hoag Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.  She was pronounced dead just before 2 p.m.  
 
The driver of the van was not injured. Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.
 
The accident remains under investigation.
