Posted on Aug 11, 2014
Shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2014, 19-year-old Justin Romo, of El Monte, was killed in a wrong-way crash in Azusa, reported the Los Angeles Times. A suspected drunk driver struck Romo’s car while traveling in the wrong direction on the westbound 210 Freeway. Romo died at the scene. Azusa police later apprehended the DUI driver.
The California Office of Traffic Safety’s most current records indicate that motor vehicle collisions claimed the lives of or caused injury to 247 people in Azusa in 2011. Alcohol was a contributing factor to 17 of the fatal and injury crashes that occurred in the city that year. In a comparison of the crash statistics of 94 cities with populations of between 25,001 and 50,000, the OTS ranked Azusa 15th for its incidence of traffic accidents and 31st for collisions involving alcohol; 1st place is the worst possible ranking.
