Cajon Pass: John Cabrera Jr. and Nicole Lyle Killed in Crash
Posted on Jun 27, 2014
Shortly before 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, 16-year-old John Cabrera Jr., of Phelan, and 18-year-old Nicole Lyle, of Victorville, were killed in a crash in the Cajon Pass, reported the Daily Press. David Castaneda; Mikey Baker, 20, of Phelan; and Shane Gretzner, 19, of Phelan were seriously injured in the accident. At one time, all of those involved in the collision were students of Serrano High School, where hundreds of people came together for a vigil the night following the tragic accident.
The crash occurred when the female driver of a dump truck that was part of the construction crew working on the I-15 Cajon Pass Rehabilitation Project ran a stop sign at the southbound I-15 off-ramp at Highway 138 and struck the PT Cruiser in which the young men and woman were riding. The Cruiser rolled under the dump truck, coming to a rest stuck under the truck 20 feet from the road. Emergency responders worked into the early morning hours of Wednesday extricating the young men from the wreckage. Authorities are investigating the accident.
The Daily Press reported that eleven people have died in accidents in the High Desert area since Mother's Day. A family of five from Hesperia lost their lives in a crash at the intersection of Main Street and Balsam Avenue on that holiday. Less than a mile from the location of that accident, two more people died in a collision later that month. Throughout San Bernardino County, 11,627 people lost their lives or were injured in motor vehicle collisions in 2011, the most current year for which the California Office of Traffic Safety has made crash data available to the public.
Under California law, those who have been injured or lost loved ones to traffic collisions may hold the at-fault parties liable through the civil claims process. For more information, please call 888-752-7474 or contact us online.
