Canoga Park: Teenager Alex Romero Killed in Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident

At around 9 p.m. last night, a motorist struck and killed teenage bicyclist Alex Romero in Canoga Park, fleeing the scene afterward. The hit-and-run accident occurred on De Soto Avenue near Valerio Street. Police believe the driver was traveling in a gray Toyota Corolla. Statewide, the number of bicyclists killed in traffic accidents decreased by 9.2 percent from 109 in 2008 to 99 in 2009, the lowest since 1984, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. That year in Los Angeles County, 4,268 bicycle riders lost their lives or were injured in traffic accidents. Moreover, hit-and-run was a factor in 6,264 fatal and injury crashes.
