Posted on Jul 07, 2014
Shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2014, a drunk driver struck and injured two pedestrians in Costa Mesa, reported the Daily Pilot. Jana Lynn Swauger, 51, hit the two pedestrians, who had bent over to light a firework, on Wilson Street near Canyon Drive. Emergency responders transported them to an area hospital, one of them for a broken leg. Authorities arrested Swauger on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.
Pedestrians were involved in 26 of the 718 accidents that resulted in injury or death in Costa Mesa in 2011, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Alcohol was a factor in 86 of the fatal and injury accidents. Costa Mesa ranked the 2nd worst in the state for a city its size for alcohol-related traffic collisions. That year, 33 people were killed and 2,152 were injured in crashes that occurred on the 4th of July.
Pedestrians who have been injured in traffic accidents may file personal injury claims against the at-fault driver in order to be compensated for the cost of their recoveries, such as for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
