Glendale: Motorist Injured in DUI Crash with Former Bauhaus Frontman Peter Murphy

Posted on Mar 19, 2013

At about 11:48 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, a motorist was injured in a DUI crash with 55-year-old Peter Murphy, the former frontman of the 1970s British goth-rock band Bauhaus, in Glendale. Murphy rear-ended a Mercedes with his Subaru Forester at the intersection of Central and Goode avenues and then fled the scene. A witness followed Murphy onto the 134 Freeway, finally blocking his vehicle in the 3400 block of Barham Boulevard in Los Angeles and detaining him until police arrived. Authorities arrested him on suspicion of causing injury while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, felony hit-and-run, and methamphetamine possession. Emergency responders transported the driver of the Mercedes to an area hospital to receive treatment for her injuries. The accident is under investigation.

“After a DUI crash resulting in injury, the driver may face criminal charges and civil actions,” explained California car accident attorney James Ballidis, “as the state will penalize the driver for violating its laws and the victims will seek compensation for expenses associated with their recoveries.”

Glendale accounted for 3 of the 346 fatalities and 842 of the 62,881 injuries suffered by motor vehicle occupants in collisions that occurred in Los Angeles County in 2010, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Alcohol was a factor in 48 of the accidents that resulted in injury or death in the city that year; 40 involved hit-and-run.
